Jim Rimmer - April 1, 1934 - January 8, 2010

Jim Rimmer, born April 1, 1934 died of throat cancer January 8, 2010.

He was a type designer, typefounder, printer, teacher, publisher, illustrator, mentor and friend to many. He was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and attended Vancouver Technical School. During his freelance years he worked on projects for the major agencies and design studios in Vancouver, for corporations, airlines, mining and forestry companies. A large part of his work entailed letter design and lettering projects.
Rimmer was noted as the proprietor of the Pie Tree Press, located in New Westminster, a letterpress shop for which he designed many typefaces in metal, including Albertan, Kaatskill and Stern.
He had several presses, including a very large Colt’s Armory. He also had a complete Monotype setup, which let him cast individual letters for handsetting and complete pages of text when driven by punched paper tapes. But the most unusual thing he had was a pair of pantograph machines, which allowed him to engrave matrices for making new type faces.
He was an inspiration to so very many.
